I went to the ATM after church to withdraw some money when this elderly lady came up to me and asked if I could help her update her passbook. I said I could do that but the machine was broken. She then proceeded to ask if I could help her withdraw some money and check how much money she had in her bank. I said okay. As there were steps up to the ATM, she was unable to walk up due to her leg. She asked if I could help her and she gripped on tightly to me as she climbed up the stairs. She gripped on very tightly. And I helped her fulfill the task. After that, I helped her down the stairs as well. She was so grateful that I helped her that she couldn't stop thanking me and kept asking if I had already eaten because if I hadn't, she wanted to treat me to some noodles. I told her I had already eaten and that noodles were not necessary. She was so thankful as she left, she kept thanking me over and over as she walked away.
As I walked off, I felt happy and sad at the same time.
Happy, because I helped that woman and she was so thankful for that and that was such a heartwarming thing.
Sad, because before I helped her, she was asking people to help her but she was constantly ignored. She also told me that everyday she tries to withdraw and has to constantly ask people for help but they ignore her. Even as I helped her, people were just standing around and watching and it wasn't like she was exactly very light. It pained me to see that people just stood there and watched me help that poor lady.
I think doing a good deed goes a long way, and it was so nice to watch that lady smile after I helped her.
Next time, if you see an elderly lady with a cart asking for help at the POSB ATM at Potong Pasir station, please go up and help because she really does need the help and trust me, you'll feel a lot better after that.
Sometime, everybody gets so caught up in their own world and their own thoughts, they forget the happenings around them. I say, stop staring at your phone/iPad/iPod, and look around. You never know what might happen. Do a good deed once in a while because it really makes your day a little brighter knowing you've helped a person.
