Let's get one thing straight. I'm a Christian so it's not like I'm condemning a religion or anything. I'm just merely speaking about an incident involving religion.
So I was serving this lady today and she was planning to buy a bag. As I was helping her, she looked at me and asked if I was a part-timer and I said yes. She then proceeded to tell me how young I looked and I said thanks. She then asked for my age and I told her and she was so amazed and started going on about how I was so young and I already have a job to earn money and be responsible and all that. Then she asked where I was going and I told her my school.
THIS IS THE BEST PART.
(L represents the lady and M represents me)
L: *drops bag onto the wagon* You're going to ______??
M: *nods*
L: OHMYGOODNESS YOU'RE SO BLESSED TO HAVE MET ME TODAY! (Note: all italics indicate that she's screaming)
My son and daughter were from the same school and now my son has finished his university degree and working and my daughter got a scholarship to Australia! Let me tell you the RULES OF THE GAME!
(She then proceeds to tell me about how I have to stay focused right from the start and treat every project like a baby and get very good grades to guarantee myself a spot in a university. All this happens and I stand there wide-eyed as she's practically yelling)
SO DO YOU UNDERSTAND NOW? THE RULES OF THE GAME? YOU MUST MUST MUST FOLLOW THE RULES IN ORDER TO WIN!
Here, have this book!
(She takes a book out of her bag. It's a spiritual book.)
HERE THIS WILL HELP YOU ALONG YOUR JOURNEY.
Imagine this going on for 10 minutes straight. Oh good mother of gravy.
This was followed by a TONIGHT YOU MUST GO HOME AND THANK THE LORD FOR MEETING ME TODAY SO THAT I COULD PASS YOU THESE WORDS OF WISDOM! GO HOME AND THANK THE LORD!
Can you imagine?? This going on and on for about a full half an hour?? And she kept talking about how wonderful the book is and how it will save my life and it's specifically targeted towards teens and 'people who has just come out to work and have no direction in life'.
And I MUST 'THANK THE LORD MEETING ME'
She even gave me her number so that if I found a need to have to get more of the book, I can call her to order and she'll give it to me.
Yes ma'am. Thanks a lot for this very traumatising event. My ears hurt now.
See, I am totally okay with people evangelising to me. I am perfectly fine with that. However, when somebody is screaming at you about how I must thank the Lord for her and her words of wisdom then you are going too far. I enjoy small talk with customers, and I do enjoy listening to elderly ladies with your stories and you telling me about school life is great, but when you try shoving a religion (MY religion) down my throat, that's where I draw the line.
And I did tell her that I was a Christian and she said 'totally fine' and still went on about how the book will change my life and I will find new meaning in life.
Well, thanks to this lady, I now have an interesting story to tell people.
I would like to point out that not all Christians believe in shoving our belief down people's throats.
I know Hollywood like to portray us that way, and this incident is definitely not helping, but not all of us are like that. We are people too, and forcing someone to come into a religion is not right.
This lady, does she do this to a lot of people? Does she carry around these books to hand them out to people and scream about religion into their faces? If so, I sympathize. We are in the same boat, my friend.
Good night.
